Halfway between Fort Collins and Longmont, right where the Front Range starts to rise up in the background, sits Loveland — a city that's built its identity around two things most towns don't even try to combine: fine art and small-town warmth.

The Vibe: Sweetheart City With Serious Artistic Roots

Loveland was founded in 1877, named after railroad executive William A. H. Loveland, and spent its early decades as an agricultural town known for sugar beets and sour cherries — at one point home to the largest cherry orchard west of the Mississippi. That working-town history still shows up in Loveland's grounded, unpretentious character.

But somewhere along the way, Loveland also became one of the most artistically significant small cities in the country. It's home to a cluster of internationally recognized bronze foundries and a community of roughly 200 working sculptors, earning it the nickname "Sculpture City, USA." At the same time, its Valentine's Day love-stamp tradition — where the post office re-mails Valentine's cards with a Loveland postmark from around the world — cemented its other nickname: the Sweetheart City.

Today, with a population approaching 81,000, Loveland offers something Timnath and Windsor can't quite match yet: mature infrastructure, established neighborhoods, and a real, walkable downtown, alongside Lake Loveland and panoramic views of Longs Peak and the Front Range. It's a city, not just a growing suburb — but it still feels like a place where people know their neighbors.

The Iconic Event: Sculpture in the Park

If one event defines Loveland, it's Sculpture in the Park, held every August at Benson Sculpture Garden. The 2026 show runs August 7–9 and marks its 42nd year — it's the largest outdoor juried sculpture show and sale in the United States, drawing 15,000 to 20,000 visitors and featuring more than 160 sculptors from around the world. Benson Sculpture Garden itself is free to visit year-round and holds over 180 permanent bronze sculptures worth more than $5 million, making it Loveland's #1 attraction even outside show weekend.

Two more traditions round out Loveland's calendar: the city's Valentine's Day love-stamp remailing program, running every February, and a major Fourth of July Festival — this year's especially significant as part of the nation's 250th and Colorado's 150th anniversary celebrations.

New Construction in Loveland

Loveland's new construction tends to be more "pocketed" than nearby Timnath or Windsor — development happens in phases at the edges of an already-established city rather than as one continuous build-out. Here's what's active:

• Kinston (Centerra) — One of Loveland's largest master-planned communities, part of the broader Centerra development. The Petal Collection offers new single-family homes with access to the Kinston Hub, a community gathering space with a café, plus proximity to The Promenade Shops and Centerra Marketplace.
• Enchantment Ridge — Loveland's largest master-planned community, known for panoramic mountain views and a range of builders including Charles Cox Design Builders, Cambridge Homes, and Berthoud Development.
• The Lakes at Centerra — A master-planned community from American Legend Homes situated around the Centerra retail and recreation hub.
• Additional active builders in Loveland include Bridgewater Homes, Buer Homes, Challenger Homes, KB Home, Landmark Homes, Richmond American Homes, and Taylor Morrison, offering everything from ranch-style single-family homes to townhomes and condos.

Compared to Timnath, Loveland's new-construction options skew slightly more varied in product type — meaning more townhome and condo options alongside single-family homes, which can be a good fit for buyers who want new construction without the size or price tag of a full master-planned single-family community.
